22. CHOICES... AND A COOKIE
오라클의 한마디 한마디가 예언이자 안내문입니다. 예언이라는 것이 무엇인지에 대해서도 잘 설명해주고 있지요. 오라클역의 글로리아 포스터씨는 속편 촬영중 사망하였는데 고인의 명복을 빕니다.
Oracle: I know you're Neo. Be right with you.
Neo: You're the Oracle?
Oracle: Bingo. Not quite what you were expecting, right? Almost done. Smell good, don't they?
Neo: Yeah.
Oracle: I'd ask you to sit down, but your not going to anyway. And don't worry about the vase.
앉으라고 해도 안앉을테고. 꽃병은 신경쓰지마
Neo: What vase?
Oracle: That vase.
Neo: I'm sorry.
Oracle: I said don't worry about it. I'll get one of my students to fix it.
Neo: How did you know?
Oracle: What's really going to bake your noodle later on is, would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything. You're cuter than I thought. I guess why she likes you.
네오가 꽃병을 깨고 어떻게 알았냐고 하자 오라클은 '내가 그 말을 안했다면 꽃병을 깼을까?' 가 궁금한게 아니냐고 합니다. (bake one's noodle later on 의 뜻은 한글판이 없었으면 계속 모르고 있었을 듯. 이 구어체 표현에 대해 자세한 설명을 부탁드립니다.) 예언은 그 자체로 존재하지 않습니다. 예언을 하는 것도 예언을 듣는 것도 이미 그 행위가 미래에 일어날 사건에 영향을 미치고 미래를 바꾸게 되는 것입니다.
Neo: Who?
Oracle: Not too bright, though. You know why Morpheus brought you to see me?
Oracle: So, what do you think? You think you're the one?
Neo: Honestly I don't know.
Oracle: You know what that means? It's Latin. Means `Know thyself'. I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Being the one is just like being in love. No one can tell you your in love, you just know it. Through and through. Balls to bones. Well, I better have a look at you. Open your mouth, say Ahhh.
'너 자신을 알라' 네오에게 스스로에 대해 아는 것know (think 가 아니라) 에 대해 강조합니다. 이는 모피어스와의 대련에서 모피어스가 이미 지적한 바 있습니다. 네오는 스스로가 '그가 아니다' 라고 생각하는게 문제지요.
Neo: Ahhh.
Oracle: Okay. Now I'm supposed to say, `Umm, that's interesting', but then you say...
Neo: But what?
Oracle: But you already know what I'm going to tell you.
Neo: I'm not the one.
내가 '흥미롭지만' 이라고 하면 너는 ? 내가 뭐라고 말할지 알고 있지?
네오가 '난 그가 아니군요' 라고 합니다. 오라클은 네오에게 '넌 아니다' 라고 한적이 없습니다. 하지만 네오는 '그가 아니다'라고 잘못 알고know 있습니다. 이것은 오라클이 어떻게 말을 해준다고 해서 바뀌는 것이 아니지요. 이미 이야기한데로 사랑에 빠진 것은 다른사람이 말해줄 수 없고 스스로 아는 것입니다. 만약 이 때 네오가 '제가 맞군요' 라고 했으면 오라클은 다르게 대답했겠지요.
Oracle: Sorry kiddo. You got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something.
Neo: What?
Oracle: Your next life maybe, who knows? That's the way these things go. What's funny?
next life. 네오가 죽은 후에 '그'가 됨을 예언하는 말입니다.
Neo: Morpheus. He...he almost had me convinced.
Oracle: I know. Poor Morpheus. Without him we're lost.
Neo: What do you mean, without him?
Oracle: Are you sure you want to hear this? Morpheus believes in you, Neo. And no one, not you, not even me can convince him otherwise. He believes it so blindly that he's going to sacrifice his life to save yours.
Neo: What?
Oracle: You're going to have to make a choice. In the one hand you'll have Morpheus' life and in the other hand you'll have your own. One of you is going to die. Which one will be up to you. I'm sorry, kiddo, I really am. You have a good soul, and I hate giving good people bad news. Oh, don't worry about it. As soon as you step outside that door, you'll start feeling better. You'll remember you don't believe in any of this fate crap. You're in control of your own life, remember? Here, take a cookie. I promise, by the time you're done eating it, you'll feel right as rain.
(right as rain 라는 건 '매우 순조롭다, 건강하다' 라는 뜻의 구어체 표현이라고 합니다)
또다른 선택. 양손. 네오는 수많은 선택을 해야하고 해왔습니다. 기억나십니까? 모피어스와 네오가 처음만나 했던 대화에서 네오는 자신의 삶을 자신이 통제할 수 있다는 믿음을 가지고 있고 그래서 '운명같은거 믿지 않는다' 고 했었지요. 네오는 오라클의 예언을 넘어서서 미래를 스스로 만들어 낼 수 있을 것인가!!
미래가 정해지지 않아 스스로의 힘으로 바꿀 수 있다면 예언이라는 것이 가지는 의미가 무엇일까요? 그건 바로 show the path 비전을 제시하는 것입니다. 진정한 예언가는 되는데로 미래를 말해주고 책임지지 않는 것이 아니라, 이루어 내야할 비전을 제시하고 그것을 이루기 위해 노력하는 사람인 것입니다.
오라클은 네오에게 쿠키를 권합니다. 왜 하필 쿠키cookie 일까요. 컴퓨터를 조금 아시는 분은 아실 것입니다. 쿠키란 인터넷을 돌아다니다가 어떤 곳에 접속하면 접속한 사람의 정보를 따로 저장해 두었다가 다음에 다시 접속하면 이미 저장된 정보를 이용하는 데 사용됩니다. 자동 로그인 기능 같은걸 떠올리시면 될 것입니다. 네오가 이제 쿠키를 먹었으니 네오의 정보는 저장, 혹시 네오가 죽더라도 쿠키에 저장된 마음은 네오를 되살려 줄것입니다.
